HYDROblock®: Efficient drainage

In order to make production even more efficient and reduce energy requirements, the brewery was modernised and a new administration building was constructed at the brewery site in Hindenburgstraße. When redesigning the site and refurbishing the logistics areas, the planners attached great importance to safe and resilient drainage systems.

Brewery with tradition focusses on efficiency

The finest beers have been brewed at the Maisel Bros. brewery in Bayreuth since 1887. Formerly a regional brewery, the fourth-generation family business is now one of Germany's leading speciality breweries. The changes on Hindenburgstraße are hard to miss. Not only has the old administration building been demolished and replaced by a modern new building on the site of the Maisel Bros. brewery, but new buildings for production and logistics have also been constructed in recent months. With a modern bottling plant, the company aims to achieve energy-neutral bottling by 2030 and increase space utilisation, floor area and flexibility by building a new block storage facility.

Safe and fast drainage of logistics areas with special requirements

Parallel to the new building construction measures, the logistics areas were redesigned and refurbished and equipped with robust, durable drainage systems. When planning the drainage system, it was important to keep in mind that the delivery of raw materials for the production of the beers and the transport of the bottled goods placed particular demands on the stability of the drainage elements. Particular attention was paid to heavily sloped areas that are used by heavy goods vehicles.

Due to the incline of the access roads to the storage and production facilities on the brewery site, the rainwater reaches a higher flow velocity, which can lead to overflowing of drainage channels. In addition, the horizontal and shear forces acting on the drainage channels are greater than usual, caused by load changes during starting and braking. A high-quality design with a sufficient nominal width was therefore required that could withstand the dynamic loads and also absorb large quantities of surface water.

HYDROblock® system - heavy-duty channel made of ductile cast iron

With the HYDROblock® channel system, we offer a drainage channel (in accordance with DIN EN 1433) for highly frequented, heavily used areas. Logistics areas, often several thousand square metres in size, such as the site of the Maisel Bros. brewery, place high demands on the design of the drainage system. Taking into account the previously described requirements for the drainage system, the planners decided in favour of using HYDROblock® DN 200 drainage channels with an inlet cross-section of 718 cm²/m.

The installation of this linear drainage system is not only advantageous in terms of its monolithic design. Due to the material EN-GJS -500 (ductile cast iron), it also offers significant advantages over other materials in terms of material fatigue, especially in the heavy load range. The monolithic design and thus the absence of loose parts is predestined for high loads, even when subjected to transverse loads. The robust HYDROblock® system can be used up to load class F 900 in accordance with DIN EN 1433. Suitable inspection elements enable easy maintenance and cleaning.
