Floating secondary school in Chemnitz

In Chemnitz, the city has realized a modern new secondary school building that offers plenty of space inside and out for learning and relaxing. The spacious design of the break area with a shady tree grid forms the central recreation area. The various trees are protected by HYDROTEC tree grates, which make the area as usable as possible right up to the tree.

Floating solitaire

The light-flooded solitaire with a net floor area of 10,000 square meters on three floors plus a basement has a weather-protected entrance area supported by columns, which gives the building the impression that it is floating. The facade design with surrounding arcades gives the Hartmann School spatial depth and blends harmoniously into the surrounding urban structure. Inside, the new secondary school has an open and spacious design and, in addition to a large foyer and modern classrooms and specialist rooms, also has a canteen. Elements made of light-colored wood form a harmonious contrast to the gray exposed concrete in many places.

Plenty of space to linger

On the large forecourt between Hartmannstraße, Fabrikstraße and the school building, there are bicycle parking spaces as well as seating areas that invite children to linger. The generously designed playground, which is separated from the play and sports areas, also has plenty of places for children and young people to sit and lie down, making it a pleasant place to spend time.

Trees as a design element

Trees are used as a central design and connecting element on both squares, which are paved with concrete blocks. Two tree grids of nine trees each characterize the break area. Additional trees provide shade and have a calming and balancing effect as a natural contrast to the light grey concrete.

HYDROTEC tree grates

Tree grates protect the roots or the soil around the tree from excessive compaction and make the area as usable as possible right up to the tree. In the version with gratings, precipitation can seep away largely unhindered and optimum air exchange is also ensured.

The square HYDROTEC tree grates with grating are produced on request. For the Oberschule am Hartmannplatz project, gratings were manufactured from galvanized steel with external dimensions of 1,500 x 1,500 mm. With an internal opening of 600 x 600 mm, they provide sufficient space for the tree trunk for years to come. The mesh size is 33 x 11 mm, the bearing bar is 40 x 3 mm. Due to the profiling of the cross bars, the walkable surface of the gratings has a slip-resistant effect, so that the requirements of slip resistance class R11 are met. The components of the tree grating include a hinged irrigation cover, an insert frame and a 250 mm high concrete foundation. The steel frame construction can withstand an unbraked wheel load of 15 kN.
